WhatsApp to stop working on millions of phones from January 1

A new WhatsApp update will prevent millions of users from using the messaging platform from January 1 2020.

For older IOS and Android devices, WhatsApp will become permanently inaccessible forcing owners to buy a new smartphone. However, for some devices, the owners could update to the latest software to continue using the app.

The affected devices are those running on software older than iOS9 and Android 4.0.3 or older versions of the operating system.

To avoid losing their chats, users of said models should back up their chats before January 1, 2021, if they want to retain them.

To check your software version, go to Settings General >  Software update for IOS and Settings General >  About Phone for Android.
